Why You? Why Me?
You can’t escape writing. Whether for work, for school, or for posting your latest rant about the inefficiencies of some government agency, writing is a necessity. You write because you have to, but nobody is gonna make you enjoy it, darn it! You’d rather do algebra.
How do you spell “rhythm” again? Is it who or whom? Their? They’re? There? When on Earth do you use a semicolon? And why do you even want to?!
Look, the world won’t admit it and advertising agencies will never abide by it, but grammar, punctuation, and spelling still matter. Even your smartphone, with its annoying auto corrections, knows this truth. You don’t have to remember all the rules of the English language, nor do you have to enjoy the mechanics of writing, but you do need to communicate effectively if you want a book that sells, if you want to attract quality customers, if you want a good grade, if you want that job, or even if you want to make the powers that be sit up and take notice.
So, purge that jumble of thoughts onto the closest piece of paper or laptop, then let someone who loves the architecture of the language and who can tell you what a gerund is add a little polish to your masterpiece.
My name is Monica Dennis and I am the founder of On-Call Editing, an editorial agency dedicated to moving you from plan to publication. I have been editing for over 25 years. While a stint as the editor of my college newspaper opened a door to the world of journalism, it was a brush with an
aspiring copy editor during a post-college internship that sparked an unexpected interest that turned into a love of the craft of editing. I found it was a natural skill that I honed over the years on the copy desk of a major newspaper, the editorial department of a direct marketing firm, and eventually as the managing editor with two health information and education organizations. I have worked in a variety of media from digital to print, always working intimately with sales, marketing, technology, and design to get the job done. Now, my team and I are here to partner with you.
I love what I do. I enjoy helping new writers to navigate the mysterious world of publishing. I get satisfaction from helping busy writers to make sure their message is on point. And if the desire to write is there, but the steps to do so are still a blur, then let’s team up to bring your vision into focus through my hands-on coaching service.
